Home of the Otters – Belchishko Blato

It is rather difficult for a person to get a sense of the geographic specifics of a particular region several million years ago. However, Sini Viroi, the small relict of the ancient Dessaret Lake, could, for a moment, remind of Debarca’s layout five million years ago. Belchishta Wetland, or known as “Sini Viroi” (Blue Swirls) because of its blue waters, is one of the largest remaining wetlands in Macedonia. It is located at an altitude of 760 metres, in the foothills of Ilinska Mountain, under its west arc Gaber.

In addition, the wetlands are of particular interest due to the flooded alder forests. The five-kilometre trail along the amazing swirls and water springs is ideal for recreational-tourist activities in nature. The view to Matica River, whose waters flow into the Ohrid Lake, is outstanding. These wetlands are also specific since they are home to the most abundant population of otters (Lutra lutra) in North Macedonia, included in the category of globally threatened species. The flooded area represents an ideal environment for this exceptionally skilled swimmer feeding on fish, crustaceans, frogs, and water insects. This landscape was also, for an extended period, a home for the buffalos, which prefer rivers and humid lowlands. Unfortunately, this animal can no longer be found, leaving only the horns attached to some of the houses in this area as a remembrance for this mighty animal, which was most often used for transport and ploughing.

This tour offers a unique opportunity for getting acquainted with the rich Macedonian tradition. The most famous creator of traditional musical instruments, bagpipes and drums, is native of Belchishte. Here you can learn of the specific manner of their creation, and you will have the opportunity to hear the sound they produce.

We further proceed to the single monastery in the country dedicated to all saints. Located in the vicinity of the Leshani village, the monastery known as “All Saints” offers heaven on earth, enjoyment and spiritual serenity. Dense oak and hornbeam forests can be found above the monastery, and a fruitful field under it.

You will also learn more of the miracles of the monastery, healings, nativity miracles, as well as of the 2004 miracle, witnessed by father Bartholomew. In addition, you will learn of the legends regarding one of the most sung Macedonian folk heroes, native of this area, Kuzman Kapidan.
